76ers list Jaylen Brown questionable for Knicks Cup opener; Embiid and LeBron off report
Jaylen Brown is questionable with left knee soreness for Friday's NBA Cup game against the Knicks, while Joel Embiid and LeBron James are not listed.

The Philadelphia 76ers listed Jaylen Brown as questionable with left knee soreness for Friday night's game against the New York Knicks at Xfinity Mobile Arena. It is the Sixers' first of four games in East Group B of the 2026 NBA Cup, NBC Sports Philadelphia reported. Joel Embiid and LeBron James are both off the injury report, which means Philadelphia could have both stars for the first night of a back-to-back.
The Brown news comes with no clear explanation. Liberty Ballers noted that he didn't appear to get hurt during Tuesday's win in Indiana. He played 34 minutes that night, below his usual load. Through five games he is averaging 36.3 minutes, fourth-most in the league, along with 20.6 points, 6.6 rebounds and 4.2 assists, according to NBC Sports Philadelphia. Heavy reported that the team had not said whether he would play. VJ Edgecombe returned from an abdominal contusion against the Pacers and is not listed.
How the Sixers are handling Embiid and James stands out. During last weekend's back-to-back, the two split the rest nights: Embiid played the first game and James played the second. This time Philadelphia appears to be loading up for the Knicks. Liberty Ballers pointed to the Prime Video broadcast, since nationally televised games fall under the league's player participation policy, and to the Cup stakes for a franchise that has never gotten out of group play. The outlet raised the possibility that both stars sit Saturday in Charlotte instead.
The frontcourt is still short-handed. Dominick Barlow (lower back stress reaction), Jabari Walker (left patellar tendinopathy), Tacko Fall (left quadriceps strain) and Ariel Hukporti (right Achilles tendon tear) are all listed as out.
What it means for Friday
The 76ers are 4-1, and their first win was a 106-100 result at Madison Square Garden on opening night. Since then they have beaten Cleveland 114-106 and Milwaukee 127-116, lost 106-93 at home to Detroit and won 114-109 in Indiana. New York started 0-3 but comes in on a two-game winning streak after beating the Pistons and Bulls.
Even with home court and a win over New York already this season, Philadelphia is the underdog on this site's board across 12 venues. On Novig, the Knicks are favored at -115 on the moneyline and the Sixers are +113. The best Philadelphia price anywhere is +114 at BetRivers, one point away from Novig, so the venues are close to agreeing on the side. Sportsbook hold on the moneyline runs from 3.0% to 4.5%.
The spreads differ a bit more. Novig has New York -1.5 at -113 and Philadelphia +1.5 at +108. Pinnacle has the best Sixers number at +2, priced at -107. The total is 227.5 on Novig, and FanDuel has the best under at 228.5 for -108.
The point spread is under two points, so the market sees Friday as close to even. Whether Brown plays is likely the biggest open question before tipoff.
